Temperament and Emotions

Exploration – Shyness-boldness – Avoidance – Activity – Aggressiveness – Sociability

Fun Facts

Cows can learn to press a panel to open a gate for access to a food reward, and studies have shown that cows may react emotionally to their own learning improvement.

In scientific studies the ear postures of cows have been shown to be indicators of emotional state and overall animal welfare. Cows are not great at hiding stress… they unwilling communicate stress to the herd through substances excreted in their urine.

Cows negative emotional states are associated with:

  • Hot-iron disbudding (dehorning)
  • Postoperative dehorning pain in calves
  • Short-term isolation resulting in severe psychological stress causing an increase in vocalizations, heart rate, and plasma cortisol concentrations.
